Old Granary Studios
(Creative Warehouse.Vernacular.Community Wellbeing)

We have been appointed in transforming old Royal Academy of Dance studios, giving the buildings and courtyard a new lease of life as a mixed use creative design and wellness hub.

The host site was once the old Granary building, ideally located off the banks of the Thames. It is accompanied by the Fonteyn Building, another warehouse, and is set in a quiet private courtyard off Battersea Square. The historic fabric of the building has generally been retained, with key alterations being a metal-clad extension at the Northern end as a performance space; and a closed bridge for an internal link between the two buildings. The proposed mixed use scheme looks to retain the positive architectural aspects of the buildings with their generous volumes, flexible layouts, tall ceilings, large windows and to celebrate the industrial past of the buildings. Externally, the cobbled courtyard is proposed to be softened as a living oasis of calm, providing a new open air green heart to the scheme.

The building programmes are generally split between levels, each connected by the existing vertical circulation cores within the main building via a new reception area.

The ground floor accommodates two wellness tenants, a small cafe and artists studios, all benefitting from active connections onto the courtyard; with the first and second floors as offices and community event space. On the top floor, the open vaulted roof structure is the perfect space for a pilates studio and gym.
